El material conocido como corcho blanco en realidad no es corcho, no existe dicho color en nuestro producto ya que el corcho es marrón o el expandido negro ( y otras variantes en color por ejemplo en las telas).

¿Qué es entonces el corcho blanco?

Es poliestireno expandido EPS aunque popularmente se conoce como corcho blanco, es poliespan o porexpan. Es un material plástico celular, compuesto esencialmente de aire (hasta un 98%), generalmente de color blanco.

Cierto es que, prácticamente, todos los materiales de espuma arden, de hecho, a una temperatura elevada, así es, con una chispa prende.

Todo lo contrario pasa con el corcho natural, le cuesta muchísimo arder en el marrón y no arde en el negro . Por lo que aquí tenemos una gran diferencia en nuestras opciones de construcción.

El mal llamado corcho blanco, es tóxico, ya que al arder, sufre una descomposición, como otros hidrocarburos, como la madera o el papel, entre otros.

Los productos de combustión, son básicamente monóxido de carbono y estireno (hidrocarburo aromático líquido amarillo e incoloro) que al incendiarse, pueden descomponerse aún más despidiendo óxidos de carbono, hollín y humo.

En el caso del corcho natural no ocurre esto ya que ni es tóxico ni desprende gases nocivos.

Por ello es tan importante el diferenciar unos productos de otros, con ello no pretendemos calificar cual es cual pero si aclarar las diferencias, máxime cuando el corcho natural es sin duda, a nuestra forma de entender, la mejor opción.

Los diferentes productos y también los diferentes precios en construcción son casi infinitos. Hoy en día, para comparar tenemos que hablar de iguales o similares, lo cual, en este caso, no es así.

El Centro de Investigaciones Científicas y Tecnológicas de Extremadura (CICYTEX) es participante en el proyecto innovador Go Suber, cuyo objetivo principal es modernizar la tarea de extracción de corcho.

Mediante la mecanización de la saca, la optimización de los procedimientos de descorche y la mejora de las condiciones de seguridad y salud. Además, busca valorizar este producto y sus derivados para mejorar su comercialización, desarrollando nuevas aplicaciones.

Este objetivo implica probar las máquinas de descorche actuales y las herramientas complementarias usadas para esta labor, como escaleras corcheras o tenazas. Se trata de analizar su rendimiento y ergonomía para hacerlas más eficientes y seguras.

Los ensayos de los prototipos y técnicas se llevarán a cabo de forma paralela en Andalucía, Extremadura y Cataluña; principales regiones productoras de corcho a nivel nacional, aunque los resultados serán extrapolables a nivel europeo.
